Educational Training

Group Courses

At Martha & Friends we have several Diploma Pathways for you and your dog to choose from.

If you have a puppy who has recently joined your family, we recommend you to join our Puppy Block or Open Courses followed by our Young Dogs 1, 2, & 3 Courses.

For further (or simultaneous) training we have created several Diploma Pathways in which a distinct, time-bound, and easy to follow curriculum is required to graduate with a Martha & Friends Diploma in that Diploma Pathway. For those of you only interested in taking one or two classes of your choice then you are still welcome to book these outside of the Diploma programs.

Well-Mannered Dog Diploma

Everyday Etiquette Block Course

with Anne Barrere

Who for: Dogs from 10 months Date: Start 04.02.2023 every Saturday 11.15-12.15 Location: Martha & Friends

Our everyday life often provides one challenge or another for us human-dog teams. Therefore, we want to learn in this course how in real life, with all its distractions and temptations for our dogs, a human-dog team can get through everyday life in a safe and controlled manner.

The open group is aimed at those who want to get through everyday life in a relaxed manner together with their dog. Dogs joining this class should already have initial ideas for basic obedience (such as sitting, staying, and running on a loose leash), but they may not yet be able to put them into practice in every situation.

We practice going on the leash without pulling, basic commands, and talk about intra-specific communication. You learn to better assess your dog, strengthen the bond and ensure, in the meantime, that the trust grows between the two of you.

In addition to learning and deepening commands that can make everyday life easier, learning on a social and emotional level also plays a major role. All exercises are individually adapted to age, level of development and the composition of the training group.

BVZ-Dog handler licence

Who for: Dogs from 12 months Date: Coming Soon! Location: Martha & Friends and nearby areas

A challenge for ambitious dog owners!

This course is about the preparation for the exam for the dog handler license of the German association „BVZ-Hundetrainer e.V.“

With this license the „BVZ-Hundetrainer e.V.“ offers a high-quality test that not only meets a high quality standard but is also subject to nationwide uniform and method-free test criteria in Germany. Dog owners should have the opportunity to obtain a dog handler license without membership in associations or clubs.

In the preparatory group, we prepare specifically for the final exam or this license, we train for example
- leash training
- staying in contact without leash
- binding recall
- how to meet other dogs & humans
- environmental security in the city
- basic obedience

There is also a theoretical preparation for the exam.

For the practical test, situations in extra-urban or free-range areas and urban areas are examined. The dog should be controllable and safe to manoeuvre by the dog owner in both areas.

Important: The license only relates to the tested team and is not transferable to other dogs (if they are owned by several dogs) or to people!

Crossdogging

With Lena Mertens

Who for: Dogs from 10 months Date: Start 03.02.2023 Every Friday 19.00-20.00 Location: Martha & Friends

The tasks change weekly and are made available to participating dog training schools by the company Crossdogging GbR.

Crossdogging involves circuit training in which two people work on each station. One person completes the given task as often as possible for two minutes, the other counts the number of runs. Then the team swaps and when both have completed the task, it goes on to the next of the 5 stations. The teams are not aware of forthcoming tasks until each training session. The tasks involve several different disciplines within dog sports. Sometimes tricky,
sometimes more athletic, from agility and retrieval to body language, circle training and tricks performed by the dogs - there will be something for everyone.

Spurnasenarbeit Workshop

with Jacqueline Koerfer

Who for: Dogs from 6 months Date: 08.01.2023 & 15.01.2023 09.30-17.30 Location: Martha & Friends

Every dog comes equipped with a highly capable sense of smell which can be used in a meaningful way to protect our local environment and threatened species. By attending Spürnasenarbeit classes, you will work together as a team with your dog to search for one or several target odours related to nature conservation. Some examples include, preventing, mapping, and eradicating invasive species; finding and protecting rare, threatened and endangered species of animals or plants; or ecological monitoring—finding where species live, how many there are, and what they need.

Dogs have a peculiar advantage in that they can cover large areas and rough terrain in a relatively short time, detecting cryptic species and scents hidden in deep vegetation. Some examples of the scenarios we work with here in Luxembourg include carcass detection of bat species protected under EU law. Conducting surveys in their mortality rates is common place around wind turbines. Another example is detecting the scat of wolves. One of the most effective ways of determining population sizes in areas, and the success of reintroduction projects for elusive species, is to perform DNA tests on animal scat. Bark beetle detection on spruces is another example, as bark beetles cause extensive tree losses in our local forests. Dogs can also detect invasive plants such as ragwort, as ragwort contains toxic compounds which can cause poisoning to horses and other livestock if eaten. Finally, we also work closely together with pest control experts for bedbug and mould detection.

Isabel worked for many highly respected breeders and trainers in Scandinavia in the early years of her career, and completed her studies as certified dog trainer in 2017. She graduated as professional dog trainer and behaviourist in 2020. Her greatest successes as breeder and handler are to have bred the Junior World Winner 2021 Shar-Pei as well as Owner/Handler of the VDH Winner of the Year and top winning Greyhound in Germany and Luxembourg 2021. Longeing/Longieren for Dogs

with Antje Lehmann

Who for: Dogs from 8 months Date: Start: 12.01.2023 Thursdays 17.00-18.00 Location: Martha & Friends

Longeing originated with Horse Training but is proven to be extremely effective with Dogs. Basically an exercise ring is created with the owner inside the ring and the dog outside the ring. The owner moves around the ring at different paces and the dog is rewarded as they mimic the movement and pace on the outside of the ring. Through training, tasks are introduced, increasing distances, and the bond and connection between the owner and the dog is improved as the dog focuses on your body language. The dog gets a real workout and will leave mentally and physically worn out!
